- If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
- If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
- If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing
I must have read this passage couple of dozen times in my life, but I'm only starting to get it. Speaking in tongues is good, prophecy is good, faith is good, giving to the poor is good, sacrifice is good. But if these gifts are exercised in the absence of love, what meaning is it?
In the bridge of the song Hosanna in the bridge, it goes
Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like you have loved me
Break my heart for what breaks yours
Everything I am for Your kingdom's cause
As I walk from Earth into eternity
God's heart is all about love. Our life lies right on that. You miss that, you miss everything. And I mean everything. The death of Jesus on the cross is supposed to point us ultimately back to the Father's love. Our sacrifices is supposed to point us back to the heart of the Father. Prophesy, tongues and healings are all supposed to point back to love of the Father. And in order for that to be the case, we need to ourselves carry the Father's heart of love. Show me how to love like you have loved me... break my heart for what break yours. More Father, more.
